Evening courses – beginning August 2019

This August sees the start of a new semester of  preparation courses offered by Berufliche Schule für Medien und Kommunikation ‘BMK’ (Room 13:00:03. Eulenkamp 46, 22049 Hamburg http://goo.gl/sY7nuh).

 

Courses include:

KURS 1: DIPLOMA IN TRANSLATION, CHARTERED INSTITUTE OF LINGUISTS
English – German / German – English

Level: C2
When: Thursdays 18.00 – 19.30 (the first lesson is free and without obligation)

Content: Translation of general and specialised texts, translation theory and practice in preparation for the Diploma in Translation*. You will need to have a high level of both English and German and be able to discuss topics such as economics, science, technology, sociology and law.
Teacher: Rebecca Garron
Rebecca is a translator at the University of Hamburg and is Head of the Hamburg center for the Diploma in Translation certificate awarded by the Chartered Institute of Linguists. Originally from Chicago, she is a proficient speaker of English who has lived and worked in Germany since 1992. In her free-time she does regular pro bono work as a translator for the International Campaign for Tibet Deutschland and is Coordination Officer for Teachers 4 Schools e.V.

KURS 5: CAMBRIDGE PREPARATION COURSE (B1 – C1)
English

Level: B1 – C1 General or Business English (Free level test)
When: Mondays 18.00 – 19.30 (the first lesson is free and without obligation)
Registration: Not necessary, simply come along on the evening.
Content: Preparation for all parts of the Cambridge exams within the range of B1 to C1 (General or Business)*, the level will be determined by the participants in the first few weeks of the course. This includes exam task strategies, mock exams,  the development of vocabulary and grammatical structures as well as tips for self study.
Teacher: Andreas Grundtvig
Andreas is a full time teacher at the BMK, as well as Centre Manager of the Cambridge Exams Centre for Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein (DE007). He grew up in East Anglia, and is a proficient speaker of English who has lived and worked in Germany since 2008. In his freetime he travels extensively, presenting at international teaching conferences, is an ELT (English Language Teaching) author,  Chair of Teachers 4 Schools e.V. and Vice-Chair of HELTATeachers 4 Schools e.V.

KURS 6: PROFICIENCY – OVER TO YOU
English

Level: C2 General English (Free level test)
When: Tuesdays 18.00 – 21.00 (the first lesson is free and without obligation)
Registration: Not necessary, simply come along on the evening.
Content: This course covers subjects and skills to promote independence and fluency, stretching your comfort zone when using proficient grammatical and lexical structures, that are necessary for the Cambridge C2  Proficiency Exam*. Critical thinking and guided discovery involve participants in the course direction and content, which will be governed by the wants and needs of participants from the beginning.

The above courses cost 144 EUR (90 minutes per week) and 288 EUR (180 minutes per week) per semester, with a 50% concession for students. Our approach is an ‘eclectic’ one, where we do not set a course book but make recommendations for self study and pull from a variety of books and sources.

*There is no requirement for course participants to take an exam.
